This February we’re reading the fantastical novel ‘Before the Coffee Gets Cold’ by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. But have a think of what you can change, perhaps something more valuable. You might ask yourself what’s the point? Especially if I can’t change the present.

Lastly, you can only travel in time once. You must drink all of your coffee before it gets cold, otherwise you will become a ghost.ĥ. Your time travelling journey ends when your coffee gets cold.Ĥ. You cannot change the outcome of the present, no matter how you act.ģ. You must stay seated in your chair for the entire duration of your travel, you cannot leave.Ģ. No, really, I’m not just talking about the decor, it is a literal functioning time machine.Ĭan you use it? Well of course you can! However, there are some rules…ġ. Oh and another thing! The cafe, is a time machine. There are a few antique clocks on the walls but unfortunately they all have different opinions with their hands going in various directions, so if you’re someone, like me, who likes to be time conscious, remember to wear a watch. It can be quite difficult to determine night or day in such a place and therefore quite easy to lose track of time. The windowless basement room is lit by only a few shaded lamps, giving you the sense that you’re sitting in an old sepia photograph. There are only a few, two seater tables situated quite close together so it can be very cosy at times if you don’t mind other people over-hearing your conversations! To make things even more obscure, it’s situated in a small, windowless basement. At first, you might struggle to find it as it’s hidden away down a very quiet alley, at a distance from all the hubbub of the vibrant Tokyo streets.

This cafe is truly a curious little place.
